The film revolves around a group of friends who have been best friends since childhood, living in the slums of Mumbai and dreaming to get out. Instead of doing the sensible thing and getting an education and a job, they decide to do something really stupid: they start driving taxis. One by one, we watch as things go from bad to worse for our four protagonists: drugs, alcohol abuse, divorce and violence haunt them like ghosts. And all the while they never stop dreaming... This is probably one of those rare films you'll love or hate - there's no in-between. The film has the flavor of an indie film, which is not really surprising since it was made on a shoestring budget, and still managed to sweep through many prestigious international film festivals. The protagonists are exuberant and lovable, but not particularly likeable. They're just too darn careless with their own lives, and subsequently with other people's lives as well! They seem to think that the simple fact of growing old together makes them best friends for life. While this may be true in real life, it certainly isn't so in reel-life. Just imagine a situation where one of your friends has a habit of stealing from you, and he gets caught by the police. Would you stand by him and take the blame? Would you kill someone to protect him? Or would you simply say, "I don't want any part of this! Best of luck to both of you!" - And walk away? I know I would! That's reality, folks. Reality means taking responsibility for your own life and belongings, not looking the other way when something bad happens... The film also seems to suggest that it's really hard to be successful in this world nowadays. Sure, in real-life it's really hard to be successful... But when you're making a movie, how much easier can it be? And yet when you look deep down at the root of the problem, there is none! Change isn't changing anything - it's just taking people out of their comfort zones and forcing them to face their own fears! Also, what kind of message is this film trying to convey? Who cares if your friends are successful or unsuccessful? There's too few successful people in this world for us to worry about what success means; moreover, successful people are probably very different from us in every way! After all, why would they want to hang out with you? Wow... It's like the filmmakers wanted to make sure that everyone in the audience ends up hating their protagonists, so they've created them in such a way that it's impossible not to hate them! Some people claimed that they cried when they watched this movie. I'm sorry, but I didn't... But I do know what it is like to cry at the movies! The last time this happened to me was when I saw "I am Legend" (2007). That film almost broke my heart. Really!
